SPUD: A Crazy 24-inch Portable Display That Pops Open Like An Umbrella
Short Bytes: SPUD, currently a Kickstarter campaign, is a portable projector which packs a 24-inch collapsible screen and has built-in speakers. The devices can be connected using the HDMI interface or wireless adapters. The projector also has a rechargeable battery which can power it for up to 10 hours, depending on the brightness level.
There are a number of mini projectors available in the market but they require a white screen on which the content can be displayed. SPUD or Spontaneous Pop-Up Display is a portable projector which can be used as a second screen. It looks like a light diffuser which connects with your laptop via the HDMI interface.
SPUD is a Kickstarter campaign which brings the silver screen to your life anytime. The video feed from a connected device is thrown on a 24-inch 720p screen using a small projector. The flexible polymer screen is collapsible like a ruggedized umbrella and the whole system weighs less than 2 pounds.
Now, just like me, you don’t want to put the extra burden on your shoulders by packing a laptop. You can also use SPUD with your mobile or tablet device with the help of a wireless adapter like Chromecast, Roku Stick, or Microsoft Wireless Display adapter. You can use the USB port present on the SPUD to power the dongle.
The portable projector can give you up to 10 hours of uptime depending on the brightness level, which can be adjusted using a dial present on it. Above all, the best part is that you don’t need to sit in a dark room to use it because the projector is placed inside the airbag. It throws light from behind the screen in comparison to regular projectors.
Hooking it with your smartphone can make your camp night more entertaining. Also, you don’t need to put your ears close to the smartphone because SPUD also has built-in speakers.
In a nutshell, it’s a one-stop portable projector solution which can help you in outdoors. You can deliver presentations at any place because the projector can fit in your bag and you don’t need a separate screen to do that. The retail price for SPUD is $499 but you can choose from multiple backing options on Kickstarter which are less than the retail price.
